Polling that I have seen says that something like 10% of Canadians favour a union with the USA. But NOT as President Elect Trump’s 51st state.
Not Québec, of course because a unified North America would be highly unlikely to allow any official language.
I suspect the number will go up and up IF Mr Trump imposes high tariffs. Even if Canada retaliates – as it would be highly justified in doing by cutting off electricity and oil – the economic pain would make the support for union grow.
The ‘new USA’ would not have 51 states. It would have something like 54: BC might be split and part of it would join Alaska while the rest would join Washington state. Ontario would be a province on its own and the Atlantic Canadian provinces might be joined into one. It’s pretty clear that prince Edward island would be only the same of a pretty little place famous for its beached and lobster suppers.
Bring it on, Mr Trump.
Let’s see if Canadians as tough as they say when going gets tough.
